This light has a LuxeonV(Portable) for the light source and uses 2 x CR123A
batteries. (Please note that some comments overlap with the L6 review.)
The head uses a part called the KL5 and is compatible with the C2, 6P and other 6V type lights. Like the L4, light is focused using a reflector. But becauase the head is larger and deaper than the L4, the beam pattern is narrower. The focus adjusts perfectly to illuminate close to mid range distances and is very useful. (It seems that I was very lucky with the Luxeon used in my L5, and it is bright, very white, and above that, even seems brighter than the L6 at close to midrange). Of course the beam pattern is what you would expect from Surefire, nice and even. Because the KL5 is not too big, the balance with the length and size of the body will not be ruined even when used together with a normal M2 head...
Also, the tail switch is worth noting that it is much easier to operate than the L4. The switch on the L4 is too stiff and needs to be pressed with much force, but the L5 has a light feel with a comfortable clicky feel, and your finger will not tire from repeatdely turning On / Off. Just loosen the tail switch to prevent from accidentally switching on. By loosening the tail cap, the switch will lock out, and will prevent you from mistakenly turning it on while carrying.
If you look at the beam comparison shots, you can tell that it can be used instead of a P60 lamp. What's more, the converter enables the light to keep the same brightness for about 50-60 minutes and the LED has a longer life than a filament lamp. If you regularly use a C2 or M2, you may consider replacing the head (KL5) or the whole body with a L5.
Among the Surefire lights which use the combination of a LuxeonV-Portable
and 2 x CR123A, other than the L5, you have the L4. The L4 is small and
light and convenient to carry around, but its ability to focus and gather
the light is rather low and has a diffused beam pattern. It is OK for illuminating
close range, but may feel insufficient when good throw is needed. As I
have written before, the L5 is better for illuminating distant areas. For
performance, a good choice may be the L5, and for portability the L4. Personally,
a L4 sized LED light with the far throw capability of the L5 would be ideal,
and I assume this can be made possible with Surefire's superb manufacturing
technology. I hope a light like that will be released in the future.
Note: This review has been written by evaluating my own L5 and the LED
built into it. Please read this review upon understanding that LED colors
and brightness vary with each unit.
